Brendan spread out under the warm sun. Suddenly a shadow blocked his view. “Are you resting comfortably my Master?” Lorne asked kneeling down beside him.

He grabbed Lorne and pulled him close. “I love the way you say that.”

Lorne rested his head against Brendan’s chest. “How I say what?”

“My master.” It sounds like you’re singing the words.

Lorne laughed.

They lay together in the grass, silently watching the sheep graze above the valley overlooking Fair Haven. These little excursions happened far too infrequently for Brendan’s taste. Running Mayhem and Pascha’s required his constant attention. If the girls working at Pascha’s weren’t fighting over dresses, then farmers from town were fighting over a goat. And everyone’s problem became Brendan’s problem. He acted like he hated it. But deep down he loved the respect people gave them. He loved being able to help his town. Because of his leadership, things got a little better for everyone each day. But most of all he loved curling into bed with his eagerly waiting pet.

As Brendan ran his fingers through Lorne’s hair, something occurred to him. “Do you wish to be free? At first you had nowhere to go, freedom would mean death. But now you’re part of Fair Haven, you have a home here. You could live your life as a free man.”

Lorne yawned. “No point in doing it now, put it in your will.” He snuggled against Brendan’s chest.

“No point?” Brendan asked.

“For as long as we both live, I belong to you. Nothing can change that.”

Brendan smiled. Lorne was his.

Forever.
